1. Monacolin K Congeners 

11 types of Monacolin K congeners were detected at Red Yeast Rice, such as Monacolin L. Monacolin M, Monacolin X etc. 

The Monacolins are integrated, But their syntheses are worlds apart. Compared with Monaclin K, 

The other Monacolins are relatively low in effectiveness of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

  3.1.Acid form Monacolin K

  Acid form Monacolin K is similar with HMG-CoA in structure, 

  thus can combine with HMG-CoA reductase to play the competitive inhibition function, consequently blocks cholesterol synthesis.

  3.2.Lactone form Monacolin K

  Lactone form Monacolin K has no activity and need to be hydrolyzed by carboxyesterases, 

  then converts to active Acid Form, and then it can exerts its lipid-reducing effort in body. 

  3.3.Studies have shown that four main components in function Red Yeast Rice have endowed it the cholesterol-lowing function:  

  - Acid form Monacolin K;

  - Lactone form Monacolin K;

  - Monacolin homologues; 

  - Unsaturated fatty acids.
